چکیده
We demonstrate a compact system, incorporating a 32-element linear array of ultraviolet (290 nm and 340 nm) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and a multi-anode photomultiplier tube, to the in-flight fluorescence detection of aerosolized particles, here containing the biological molecules tryptophan and NADH. This system illustrates substantial advances in the growth and fabrication of new semiconductor UV light emitting devices and an evolution in packaging details for LEDs tailored to the bio-aerosol warning problem. Optical engineering strategies are employed which take advantage of the size and versatility of light-emitting diodes to develop a truly compact fluorescence detector.

UV LED arrays at 280 and 340 nm for spectroscopic biosensing
We demonstrate the application of linear arrays of ultraviolet light emitting diodes (UV LEDs) at the wavelengths of 280 nm and 340 nm to the acquisition of fluorescence spectra from single particles in realtime. A compact optical system and custom electronics are employed to produce a compact, standalone biosensor. The detection sensitivity of the UV LED system is established using the biofluo...
متن کاملA single particle multichannel bio-aerosol fluorescence sensor
We describe a prototype low-cost multi-channel aerosol fluorescence sensor designed for unattended deployment in medium to large area bio-aerosol detection networks. Individual airborne particles down to ~1 m in size are detected and sized by measurement of light scattered from a continuous-wave diode laser (660nm). This scatter signal is then used to trigger the sequential firing of two xenon ...
متن کاملSimultaneous light scattering and intrinsic fluorescence measurement for the classification of airborne particles.
We describe a prototype laboratory light-scattering instrument that integrates two approaches to airborne particle characterization: spatial light-scattering analysis and intrinsic fluorescence measurement, with the aim of providing an effective means of classifying biological particles within an ambient aerosol. The system uses a single continuous-wave 266-nm ultraviolet laser to generate both...
متن کامل340nm UV LED excitation in time-resolved fluorescence system for europium-based immunoassays detection
In immunoassay analyzers for in-vitro diagnostics, Xenon flash lamps have been widely used as excitation light sources. Recent advancements in UV LED technology and its advantages over the flash lamps such as smaller footprint, better wall-plug efficiency, narrow emission spectrum, and no significant afterglow, have made them attractive light sources for gated detection systems. In this paper, ...

We present results on enhancement of 460 nm blue and 340 nm UV optical power output in III-nitride light emitting diodes ~LEDs! using photonic crystals ~PCs! under current injection. Triangular arrays of the PCs with diameter/periodicity of 300/700 nm were patterned using electron-beam lithography and inductively coupled plasma dry etching. The total power at 20 mA of 3003300 mm unpackaged LED ...
